On June 24th, we organized a half-day walk on Vitosha mountain to talk about one of the biggest challenges in forestry – forest management in conditions of climate change. Those present learned interesting information about Vitosha Nature Park and its inhabitants.
We talked about what measures should be implemented to make forests more resilient to climate change. Why and how we monitor birds, bats and insects, and when thinning operations are necessary in forests that are affected by various natural disturbances.
We explained the importance of dead wood to a forest ecosystem. How it provides habitat and serves as food for many species of plants, animals and fungi.
In the Bulgarian tradition, June 24th is also known as the day when the various grasses and herbs have the greatest healing power, so we didn’t miss a walk along the “Alley of Herbs” and see some of the most interesting plants that can be found on the territory of the park.
The walk was organized as part of the implementation of the activities of the project CLIMAFORCEE, co-financed by the LIFE program of the EU.
