WWF and Forests of the Slovak Republic organised workshops near the project localities in Slovakia

On 08/12/2022 and 09/12/2022, we have organised workshops in Horné Orešany and Tomky in Slovakia, near the project localities of CLIMAFORCEELIFE project. On the workshops, we presented results of the study carried out by the Technical University in Zvolen to the forestry public and local stakeholders. The subject of the study was the evaluation of existing models of forest management in Central and Eastern Europe and the results show i.a. that:

  • Climate change will significantly affect the forest’s ability to perform not only production (quantity and quality of wood) but also other ecosystem services
  • Proposed optimal management plans should mitigate these negative effects
  • With optimal management plans, it is possible to improve the fulfilment of all 5 evaluated ecosystem services – production, stability, carbon sequestration, biodiversity and recreation, at the same time in the given territory.

Workshops participants learned more about the concept of climate-smart forest management, the methodology for evaluating management models and the prediction of forest development under different climate scenarios and different management methods. New forest practices that will be implemented in project localities with the aim of increasing their resistance to climate change, such as thinnings with different intensity or support of natural regeneration were also presented. The impact of proposed measures will be evaluated by further monitoring of forest development and biodiversity.
